Days: 23-25. Badlands

There are rural Badlands and there are Metropolitan Badlands. We travelled through both.

In-between there was 2 000km of hot, boring wasteland that are Minnesota and Wisconsin.

So glad the wife was with me. The conversation was the only thing even remotely interesting. Sometimes.

Home tonight.

Cheers,

Morphet

Days 21 and 22: Yellowstone, Rushmore and a valley in between.

Wifi is very spotty in Wyoming.

We arrived in Yellowstone and soaked in Boiling River, a hot spring feeding into the Gardiner river. It is hot enough to bun you real quick. If you find the right spot where the cold snowmelt in the Gardiner mixes with the Boiling river it is just awesome.

The rest of the park was crowded, busy and had a lot of people and cars and stuff. Yuck.

We eventually made our way out of the park and into the Wapiti Valley. This is top 10 most amazing places I’ve ever seen.

Descending from 8 000′ down to 5 000′ along the river with epic red rock vistas all around. To top it off the sun was setting into the most dramatic sky. It was an awesome drive down to Cody, Wyoming, the cutest little western town you ever did see. Cool.

Up early and drove across Wyoming into South Dakota’s Badlands National Forest and the Mount Rushmore National Monument.

Lots of interesting geography and history today. Lots of American flag waving. Amur’ca!

Passed the 10 000km mark in our road trip. In Rapid City now typing this up at Starbucks.

We start the long haul across the Midwest tomorrow. Heading towards Chicago.

Talk to you soon,

Morphet

Day 18 and 19: Seattle

Arrived late to Seattle. Caught the sun setting over the distant Olympic Mountains.

Pike Street Fish Market and St. James Cathedral were our stops the following morning. Rented a couple of inner tubes and floated down the Snoqualmie river. Lazy.

Turned the van towards the East and the Long Way Home.

Following day we hiked up to Bridal Veil Falls in the Mount Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest. Drove across the plateau between Seattle and Spokane. Huge sky. Very much felt like we were in the Old West.

On our way to Glacier National Park.

Day 17: Mount Rainer National Park

Sometimes the best laid plans are defeated by Mother Nature.

Rainer is a 14 000 foot volcano in southeast Washington state. You can see it for miles around.

We drove to the visitor centre and hiked straight up for a couple of hours. The view from Panorama Peak is indescribably beautiful.

Today we saw nothing. Visibility was 100 feet max. temperature was 10ÂșC and the fog was so thick it ws like walking through rain.

Yuck.

Started to clear up on the way back down. Natch’.

Seattle tomorrow.

Cheers,

Morphet.

Day 15: Leaving Tofino

Mission accomplished. We have found the best fish taco on the left side of Canada.

It lives in a chip wagon just south of Tofino.

Tacofino. Angels weep.

Sun came out. Then left. Came out. Then left, again. Walk along the sea.

Into the U.S.A. tomorrow.

May be offline for a couple of days as we explore Olympic National Park in Washington State.

Hope you are all having a great summer.

Cheers,

Morphet
